Who is Squints Closet?
Howdy! My Name is Tanya, at the time of creating Squints Closet, I was 22. I come from a small town in Colorado where there are more tumble weeds then people. I've always had an interest in sewing. My Grandma got me my first sewing machine when I was 5, back in 2006, which fun fact it the sewing machine I still use to this day. Growing up I always struggled with clothes fitting me properly. I was relentlessly bullied for never having jeans that were long enough, I always got the "are you preparing for a flood" comments. As you can imagine that kill's one self esteem. Even as I got older, I would find clothing that would fit but would also be more expensive. I believe we should all feel comfortable and confident in our own skin, for me clothing was my confidence. I started this brand originally as a mission to get my mind off of the dark times in life and to reignite an old hobby. As time went on however I realized little ol me might actually be able to make a difference in this world. In Colorado, the beautiful state that I get to call home, I've been blessed to explore some of the most beautiful areas as well as some of our most low income struggling areas. It broke my heart to see it's beauty become destroyed because of over population, high cost of living and low wages. I watched as fast fashion flooded our thrift stores, second hand stores and landfills. What stemmed from the dark days of my life, I wanted to create the light I longed to see. With that in mind Squints Closet was born.
What is Squints Closet?
Squints Closet is a women owned small business, with the goal to help reduce textile waste while creating one of a kind pieces. How can we help reduce waste? A couple of ways, I source my clothing from individuals wanting to get rid of their items before they take them to a landfill. I personally don't shop at donation stores or places that can help provide clothing access to low income families. Instead I would rather pay a higher price to someone who is trying to get rid of their clothing in a lot, this way I can help them by supporting their clean out but also not take from the clothing that has already been donated. With this clothing, the condition is a factor into its next journey. If they are in good to excellent condition, I will list these items at a reduced price from original MSRP. However if I receive items, with tears, stained or discoloration, I will cut up this clothing to collect the usable fabric to make my upcycles. All scraps are used as well, I cut up the unusable fabric to make stuffing. Full discloser, I wash items multiple times to see if I can get any flaws out before deciding to list items or to cut them up. If a garment smells or is heavily soiled, they are separated and those are disposed of for health and hazard reasons. Although if there is any ideas on how to recycle these items, I am all ears! My mission I to create 200 pieces using 100% recycled fabric and textiles while also providing accessibility and inclusivity. Never be afraid to be who you are!
